Model Project Successful Deaf and Hard of Hearing People in the Job. Working and living environment, educational history and person. (EGSB)

In the research project funded by the BMAS (AZ: Va1/Va4 - 58), 32 deaf and hard of hearing (gl/sh) people were asked in guided interviews what, from their point of view, had contributed to them becoming successful in their jobs. The interviews were conducted in the language preferred by the interviewees (spoken or sign language), videotaped, then transcribed and analyzed. The perspective of those affected was specifically chosen, because from the experiences of successful professionals, insights can be gained for a hearing-impaired specific design of workplaces as well as indications of what is particularly conducive to a positive development in the upbringing and education of gl/sh children. As a gl/sh person, you can be successful in your job if... - an open, positive approach and an active confrontation with your own hearing impairment has taken place or is taking place. - good framework conditions are in place and cooperation with superiors and colleagues is experienced "at eye level"; - the development of certain personality traits such as self-confidence, perseverance, endurance and optimism has been promoted in the biography of the gl/sh people; - gl/sh people have learned to take good care of themselves and of the success of their job and to be their own "advocate" about it ("self-advocacy"); - have been able to develop good communicative competence (spoken language or German sign language), and good written language (reading and writing), and have a willingness to engage in lifelong learning.
