Making persons with disabilities full citizens (DISCIT)

Description / Topics

The European research consortium DISCIT aims to produce new knowledge enabling Member States, affiliated European countries and the European Union to achieve full and effective participation of persons with disabilities in society and the economy. In investigating the social and political conditions for making such participation a reality, the project adopts a multifaceted understanding of Active Citizenship to operationalise the notion of "full and effective participation" in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Subject of the project are the following items: labour market participation, economic independence, community care and living, use of new technologies, political participation and representation as well as social services. The data acquisition primarily focuses on literature and document analysis, expert interviews as well as life-course interviews with persons with disabilities from three different age cohorts. Organised by the Norwegian institute for social research NOVA, the DISCIT consortium members further include universities, research institutes and two civil society organisations in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom. The consortium is supported by a Scientific Advisory Committee, a European Stakeholder Committee and nine National Stakeholder Committees.
