Supported parenthood – Services provided to parents with disabilities and chronic conditions - An analysis of the implementation of the UN Enable Article 23

Description / Topics

Based on the UN Enable Article 23, a research project was developed with the objective of an analysis and comparison of traditional support for parents with disabilities and chronic conditions with services of supported parenthood according to the UN Convention.
The research project focuses on services, and their costs, for parents with disabilities and their children offerded by child and youth welfare and integration assistance on the one hand and, on the other, by supported parenthood like assistence for parents and accompanied parenthood.
All offers will be examined regarding their appropriateness according to self-determined parenthood. A main focus of the project is to demonstrate ways how to support parents with disabilities with respect to children care and parental skills in order to prevent separation of parents and children or to promote close contact between parents and children in case of necessary separation. Additionally, case studies of parents with disabilities and chronic conditions will be compiled.
Methods are based on a multi-dimensional approach. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods, documentary analysis, structured and semi-structured surveys and case studies are applied.
An expert group (in the meaning of participation research) and a project advisory board provide consulting and support.
