Societal transformation processes in the areas of sustainability and digitalisation, with their advances in automation and artificial intelligence (AI), are driving change in the world of work. New occupational fields are emerging, and within existing fields, job roles are changing, thereby altering the skills required of employees. This also applies to people with health impairments or disabilities. On the one hand, these changes offer new employment prospects. They promote participation in working life in a previously unknown form. On the other hand, however, these changes harbour new risks of exclusion, particularly for members of vulnerable groups. This is because, despite the enormous opportunities for the participation of people with health impairments or disabilities, social change and digitalisation are no guarantee of inclusion and participation. How can people undergoing rehabilitation be empowered to participate in a changing, digitalised and sustainability-oriented world of work? How can vocational rehabilitation centres and advisers at the German Federal Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund) position themselves for the future? The f-bb is conducting research into all these questions as part of the ‘Future-Oriented Occupational Fields’ project and carrying out traditional surveys (online questionnaires, focus group interviews, etc.). The findings are translated into practical recommendations for action in collaboration with the client.
